ELDERS
WE BELIEVE THAT GOD HAS DESIGNED THE CHURCH TO BE LED BY A PLURALITY OF PASTORS WHO, IN SUBMISSION TO THE SPIRIT OF GOD AND ACCOUNTABLE TO THE WORD OF GOD, ARE CALLED TO GOVERN THE CHURCH, GUARD DOCTRINE AND SUFFER FOR THE CARE OF THE MEMBERSHIP.
At Sojourn, we see ourselves as being led ultimately by Jesus Christ, who, according to the Scriptures, entrusts the authority and responsibility of governance and care to a plurality of pastors. The term ‘Elder' is a synonymous word for pastor and describes a man of character, able to teach, protect, and lead the church. Elders are raised up by Christ, affirmed by the members of the local church and will be held accountable by God for how they shepherd the local family of God. We hold that the office of Elder is reserved for qualified men who model humility and the way of Christ. The primary task of the Elders is teaching/preaching, prayer, leadership, care, and protection.
(Matt. 18:17; Acts 6:4; 1 Cor. 5:4-5; 1 Tim. 3:1-7, 5:17; James 5:14; 1 Peter 5:1-14; Heb. 13:17)
